Q. How long does the program take?
A. Plan on it taking about 3 to 5 weeks. In extreme cases it could be more and this depends on a lot of factors. But most complete in the 3-5 weeks.
Q. Why do I have to do the program 7 days a week until I am done?
A. The program is very exact. You have to realize once you start to detoxify you need to carry through. Skipping a day or so interrupts the detoxification process and can prolong the program.
Q. I get headaches. Can I take a pain reliever like aspirin?
A. No. But before anyone starts the program they receive a very comprehensive medical and health evaluation. There can be various reasons for headaches but most can be handled with natural, non-drug remedies. The key is to find what is causing yours and handle that.
Q. I have trouble taking vitamins and getting those huge pills down. How can I do the program with that problem?
A. Many of our vitamins can be taken in powder or liquid form if needed.
Q. I’m very sensitive to any kind of vitamin or mineral and I get bad reactions when I take them. What can be done for me?
A. This is one of the reasons why we do a very comprehensive health evaluation before anyone starts the program. This kind of vitamin sensitivity is more common than one would think. We do work to find the reasons for this sensitivity and work to remedy it. One of the commonest reasons for a bad reaction to food supplements is that the body has become heavily overburdened with toxic substances to the point where almost anything one puts into the body now causes a bad reaction. The body becomes hyper-sensitive. We work to reverse that process. But we need to do your evaluation before we can say what the remedy for your personal situation is.
Q. I want to get off my antidepressants but I don’t know if I can. I’m scared. What should I do?
A. That is very understandable. Despite claims that antidepressants are not addictive, the fact remains that most people suffer heavy withdrawal symptoms when they try and come off them. But there is a right way to do it. Here at the Institute, we do a complete evaluation with our doctors and detoxification specialists on what would be the best and safest course of action for you. You can be free of these drugs. You can reverse the effects and get your life back. We will work with you to make this happen.
Q. I have high blood pressure. Can I still do the program?
A. Yes. You will receive a full medical evaluation before you begin. Some people can get their blood pressure under control with natural remedies and the doctor might suggest this in your case and will work with you to come off any blood pressure medication if you are willing, before you start the detoxification program. But if you choose to remain on the medication or if the doctor feels you should not be taken off it, the program still can be done but it will be modified and precautions taken so your program goes smoothly. In rare cases however, the doctor might suggest the program should not be done for medical reasons. This is a medical decision.
Q. What is the purpose of taking niacin on this program? Isn’t taking it dangerous?
A. Niacin is vitamin B3 and part of the B-Complex and occurs naturally in some of the foods we eat. On our program, the doses and kind of niacin used plays a key role in the detoxification process because it works to break up and unleash drug residuals and other toxins from the tissues and cells. The doses are gradually increased as the program goes on but so are the other vitamins and mineral dosages. This is done to keep things in balance. One has to keep in mind that drugs, alcohol, medications, food additives, pesticides and other toxics substance, deplete the bodies store of nutrients, create nutritional deficiencies, upset the bodies natural processes and over time, can be the cause of many chronic physical and mental complaints. Getting the body working properly and getting it to properly detoxify, requires that these lost nutrients be replaced. Niacin is one of those nutrients.
Q. I understand that niacin is important to the program, but why does it make you feel hot and get itchy and even turn a bit red for a while?
A. This is fully described in the book, Clear Body Clear Mind, which you will get a copy of as part of your program. One of the things we make sure is that before a person starts the program, they understand how and why niacin works and what can be expected. But in short, with the dosages one gets on this program, and the kind of niacin we use (immediate release), niacin as a vitamin, stimulates lipid mobilization (gets the fatty tissue active). This is important in helping the toxic substances logged in that tissue to free up. It also helps to handle the effects of past radiation exposure, which for the average person, amounts to x rays, sunburns, computer and TV screens, the general amounts of radiation one is exposed to from past nuclear fallout, and other sources of radiation. The “niacin flush” one often experiences is due in part to the niacin discharging the effects of past sunburns and general radiation exposure. On this program, many people see their old sunburns show up again on their bodies in the exact places where they were exposed. The part of the body that was covered looks normal but the part that was exposed shows definite “redness”. This detoxification program is unique in that it addresses even these issues. Remember that on this program niacin is taken in balance with the other vitamins and minerals. It is never taken without that balance. There are a lot of write-ups one can find on niacin but the general information falls far short from the full, detailed explanation as covered in, Clear Body, Clear Mind.
Q. Do I have to remain on such high dosages of vitamins after I finish the program?
A. No. When a person completes they are given less and less vitamins as the days go on until they are on the minimum recommended for normal health. Some people choose to go on their own vitamin regimen which is fine. But it is highly recommended they keep good nutrition and supplementation as part of their daily routine.
Q. If I don’t have any history of taking drugs or alcohol or even much medication, why would I need this program?
A. Drugs, alcohol and medications are just a few types of toxic substances. Unless you have been living in a “bubble”, eating only organic foods most of your life, have been free of environmental toxins, avoided heavy metals, etc, you do have toxins stored in your tissue and cells. It is true that the body does have its natural detoxification processes and it does detoxify on its own. But the real problem is due to the enormous amounts of toxins in present day life, the potency of the drugs, etc, and because of this the body cannot do its job. It gets “overburdened” and can’t eliminate toxins as it should and in many cases, the body loses its natural detoxification mechanisms to a greater or lesser degree. A person then can become “hyper-sensitive” to toxic substances and in extreme cases, certain foods and even certain vitamins and minerals.
Q. Can I do the program and have my week ends off?
A. No. The reason is once you start the program your body will start to detoxify. You are releasing the stored toxins from you tissues and cells and they need to then be eliminated. Your body will use its natural organs to do this and the largest organ of the human body is the skin. Toxins will be eliminated through the skin by means of sweating in the sauna. If we don’t release them, the toxic residuals could make you feel bad or even re-activate a past drug experience. Then they will more than likely go back into the tissue. So that is counter productive. So once you start you need to plan on following the procedure daily.
Q. How is this program any different than other detoxification programs that use a sauna?
A. The book, Clear Body Clear Mind, really gives the full answer to this question. It outlines the research and development of the program and the theory and science that supports it. There have been attempts by others to add their own ideas and practices to the program and while some might claim they have success, no program has come close or produced such results on such large numbers of people, as the Hubbard method of detoxification as covered in, Clear Body Clear Mind. Dr. Sherry A. Rodgers, MD, in her popular and enlightening book, Detoxify or Die, states:
“In the 1970’s a controversial gentleman named, L. Ron Hubbard, designed a sauna program that enabled drug addicts to detoxify. He reasoned that folks were never addicted until they had taken drugs. And the more they took, the more they craved. He thought if he could get the drugs out of the body (the unmetabolized residues), the addict would no longer crave. He published his brilliantly successful program in the book Clear Body Clear Mind in 1990.” She went on to say later, “I always say, if you want to prove that a new medical therapy works, pick the most recalcitrant, impossible to treat conditions. For if it is a success on those cases, everything else is bound to be a “piece of cake”. And that is exactly what folks have done with the sauna. By getting rid of years of drug residues in addicts, Hubbard freed them from their cravings and addictions, impressively lowering recidivism.”
One should always look at the statistics and results of an activity and learn about it form the original source and decide for themselves on the workability and if it is the right program for them.
Q. I have heard and read that far infrared saunas are better for detoxifying than regular saunas. Is this true and if so do you use one on your program?
A. There has been much written and said over the last few years on the use of far infrared saunas for detoxifying and for other uses. Based on research, it has come to be believed that far infrared does in fact penetrate and go deeper into the tissue, while using lower temperatures. However, the Hubbard method is not dependent strictly on how deep the heat goes into the tissue. What greatly helps to break up and release the toxic residuals from the tissue is the use of niacin. Light aerobic exercise done right after, helps to really get the circulation going. These residuals are then sweated out in the sauna as well as eliminated through the body’s normal means. The standard conventional dry heat sauna is really all that is needed to accomplish this. However, we do also have and use a far infrared sauna at the Institute for those who prefer to use that rather then the conventional one.
Q. What can I expect from the first few days on the program?
A. This varies from person to person because each individual has their own unique set of circumstances. Age, bodyweight, toxic history and other factors come into play. In the first few days a person is started slowly on the program, getting used to the routine etc. Some people start to exhibit detoxification manifestations right away on very low doses of vitamins and niacin and perceive toxins leaving the body. Others might need to go up to higher vitamin and niacin dosages before this happens. Either way however, the detoxification process is taking place.
Q. When is the program complete and how will I know?
A. You will be filling out a daily report at the end of each detoxification period. Your daily progress is monitored by the Detoxification Specialist and a Detoxification Case Supervisor. As you progress through the program you will feel the changes as toxins are eliminated. Many people report that they begin to feel greater energy and a feeling that they are rid of the harmful accumulation of toxic residuals. They achieve a much better outlook on life and a sense of wellbeing they have not felt before. Niacin dosages no longer produce the manifestations they did earlier. The book, Clear Body, Clear Mind lays out the criteria for a program completion and that is followed in determining when the program is complete. This usually takes about 3-5 weeks to accomplish.
Q. I feel like detoxifying is a good idea but I’m still not sure. What should I do?
A. Schedule a consultation with us. We’ll go over your situation and help you work out the best course of action for you. Once we have all the information and you have all your questions answered you can make an informed decision. We especially recommend this for people who live out of town.
Q. I know someone who is a “hard core” drug addict and wants help. Do you handle this kind of person and if not, where do you recommend they seek treatment?
A. There are those who need “in patient” facilities, meaning, they need to be under 24 hour care while coming off the drugs. Some will also need a full drug rehabilitation program and some might not. Only after getting all the information can we determine the right course of action. At the Institute for Detoxification and Health, we do not have 24 hour a day care for those in need of it. But we can refer you to very reputable facilities that will cater to your situation. We suggest you contact us and we can discuss those options. The main thing to keep mind is that good help is available and we will see to it you get it.
