When I started the Detox Program I had a feeling of drowning in stress, anger, 

impatient feelings, confusion.  I had very minor bouts of depression and even 

though I always pulled myself out, the times of those feelings seemed to get 

closer and closer.  I had a hard time with decision makings, it was hard to 

focus and concentrate.  

 

Since then, through the program, I feel more calm, less angry, even though I 

have some unresolved issues.  My stress level has really gone down.  

I still think about my unresolved issues, but I can see solutions

You take a just a little bit of a drug and it might relax you. You take a bit more and you become disoriented, a bit more and you might not see straight or be able to stand, more and you could end up DEAD.

More often than not, this is the cycle with alcohol:

1. You take a drink to loosen up or unwind.

2. You have a few more and you might not remember exactly where you are or what you needed to unwind from.

3. You drink some more and you can’t walk the straight line or say the alphabet (tests the police can use to check.

Alcohol is one of the most widely abused drugs in our society. In fact Drug Rehabilitation Counselors are helping their clients handle their AOD Problems. AOD stands for Alcohol and Other Drugs. You could say alcohol is in a class by itself.

Different people start using alcohol for different reasons. Some cultures use alcohol in their religious rites while other cultures use alcohol to celebrate a wedding, a birth or some other joyous occasion. On the other hand alcohol is often used to mourn a death or other tragedy. In some circles alcohol is considered an acceptable method of dealing with stress. Alcohol is also used as a pain killer; it can numb a person both physically and mentally.

Underage drinking is a problem that has reached epidemic proportions.
Statistically those who start drinking by the age of 15 are 400% more likely to develop alcohol dependence than those who don’t start drinking until they are 21 (it is noted that it is not legal in most states for someone to obtain alcohol until they are 21 and this statistic helps to explain why that age was chosen). It is illegal to sell or supply someone under 21 alcohol, but authorities see the problem as so widespread they feel unable to handle it and enforce the law.

Alcoholism causes great damage to the body. Liver damage, cardiovascular abnormalities, and kidney problems are just a few of the problems associated with Alcoholism. It has been found that Alcoholics are at a greater risk of HIV infection than non-Alcoholics because of their life style. The number one cause of Mental Retardation in the United States is Pre Natal Alcohol Abuse leading to Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.

The problem of alcohol abuse has gotten so bad that in 1956 the American Medical Association declared ALCOHOLISM (continued heavy drinking) a disease and the American Psychiatric Association now lists ALCOHOLISM as a mental illness. The American Hospital Association followed suit and in 1957 Alcoholism was listed as a disease that could be “treated” in a hospital.

Despite all of these declarations and proclaimed treatments, Alcoholism is a growing problem.

Alcohol and other toxic residues lodge in the fat tissues of the body. They are in the person’s body even if the person is no longer using the drug.
